The Sunday Series (25), with Mark Brodinsky

April 27, 2014 By markbrodinsky Leave a Comment

Daron and the kids

“The inspiration I am getting is from my kids, they are doing great. They are busy, social and active and have amazing friends and it’s also from other people. That helps replace the sadness.” – Beth Flaks Fisher

The fighter is gone. But the fight goes on. The family, friends and the village of people touched by Daron Fisher, keep punching.

The Sunday Series (25): Keep Punching II

Eight months after his untimely passing, the pain still resonates, but the passion is stronger than ever to make a difference, to give back. Sometimes you throw a pebble in the water and make a wave.

Daron Fisher passed away last August from brain cancer, after a 3-year battle against the beast. In a few paragraphs the original Sunday Series post about Daron’s amazing story, but first an update.

Keep Punching, a non-profit organization was created while Daron was still alive, to raise money and raise awareness to hopefully one day provide the knock-out punch to brain cancer.

keep punching beth and daron

Next month, on May 31st, Keep Punching will hold its first ever 5-K event. (http://www.eliteracemanagement.com/keep-punching-5k/)

keep punching may event

350 people have already signed up to participate and there is still more than one month to go. It’s all because the message and the mission resonate. The event will take place at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland with a 5-K and a one-mile walk, a band, food trucks and a festive atmosphere. It’s the way Daron would have wanted it, to celebrate life, not wallow in sadness. So inspired by his story, even the Baltimore County Sheriff’s Association is getting involved, with a golf tournament on October 11th to help raise funds for Keep Punching, they too want to “knock-out” brain cancer for good.
In fact people from all over the country have been reaching out to Beth Fisher and to Keep Punching when they learn about what the organization is trying to accomplish, including raising funds for devices to help fight and defeat brain cancer, devices insurance doesn’t cover. Beth has been touched and inspired by the response. You never know what can grow from just one seed. (http://keeppunching.org/)

I too have been touched and inspired by the Fisher family and so before I post Daron’s full story, I want to take a moment to say thanks.

The people who become part of this Sunday Series, many of whom I have never actually met, put their ultimate trust in me. They let me into their lives and pour their hearts out. They tell me their story and then trust in me to do the same with my heart, and write their story in a way which inspires others and share it all over the world on this blog. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly. Beth Fisher took her trust in me to a new level. When a magazine approached her about promoting the Keep Punching event and sharing Daron’s story, they asked her to write an article. She came to me instead and asked if I would allow the blog post I had written months before about Daron’s journey, to appear in the magazine. The article was just published in Mt Washington Life.

Keep Punching article

I so appreciate the synergy, the energy and the trust. The editors of the magazine were also kind enough to profile me as a Community Contributor for writing the story. I am honored.

magazine intro

Show a little love, you never know what you can change. This Sunday Series is part of my gift to others, to take my talent and ability and impact the world, one word at a time. I want you to be inspired by the heroism of those who are facing some of life’s toughest battles and still finding a way to thrive through this journey we call life. I hope it helps to put life in perspective for all of us.

And now, the re-post of Daron Fisher’s story: (http://markbrodinsky.com/2013/11/17/the-sunday-series-6-with-mark-brodinsky/)

Until next time, thanks for taking the time.

Smart with a Heart: It’s Just About… Life.

April 24, 2014 By markbrodinsky 2 Comments

smart with a heart

Sometimes a couple of words say a great deal. So simple, yet so profound. A good friend of mine used the words in the title of this blog to describe another and it made complete sense to both of us that this person possessed these qualities, the exact qualities I believe we all strive for as we move through the journey of this human adventure.

Smart with a heart. I’m sure you know people who shine in this way, hopefully most of the people you choose to spend time with, who have brains and beauty…the beauty which comes from within. The ability to love another, or to feel compassion for someone else. These are qualities which make you an attractive person. And just imagine the difference you can make, the impact you can have, the change you can inspire if you attach these qualities to your unique talents and abilities. The world is calling for you to put this perfect storm of passion, brains and beauty into motion. Heed that call.

Smart with a heart. Share it, if you’ve got it. Hang with others who have the same qualities and then have no fear. You are the product of the four or five people you spend the most time with…if all of you are cut from the same cloth, now we really have a force with which to contend. Nothing, nothing can stop a team of people who are not only great thinkers, but think of ways to mold themselves in service to others, to love, to make a difference and fulfill their own purpose.

Think. Love. Lead. Be smart with a heart and watch magic happen.

Until next time, thanks for taking the time.

You Are The World: It’s Just About… Life.

April 22, 2014 By markbrodinsky Leave a Comment

holding the world

This is the first time since the blog began I took a week away from any posts, but it was vacation time well spent, inspired by the interaction with my family, friends and the things I witnessed, paid attention to and read.

One of those was a book of quotes, each quote inspiring in its own way, but one in particular made me stop, read it again and catch my breath, mainly because of its deep, yet simplistic nature: “To the world you may be just one person, but to one person you may be the world.” – Josephine Billings.

It’s worth a second look, because it’s true. Your single participation in this world, among billions of others might seem inconsequential, but to one other person, or perhaps to many people, depending on how you live your life, you could mean everything. I think about that when I look at my children, who rely on me to do certain things on their behalf, to work, to support, to teach, to love. My importance in their lives is just that, important…for years my wife and I have been their world, especially in the early days, when we were their link to virtual survival.

But what about others you and I meet along the way in this life. Through friendship, through work, through volunteering our services. You never know who you might touch, perhaps in a tangible way, or in a way you may never even witness, but might just change the entire course of someone’s existence. You never know when you come in contact with someone how you might touch them, in service, in kindness, in friendship, in love – where you change a life so deeply that you are the one person they meet who makes their world whole. We now live in a world where you could do this for not just one person, but a billion people or more, if you choose to…because it is possible. We are that connected. Never, ever underestimate your power to change a life, to inspire, in a way someone else will never forget.

Life is full of infinite possibilities. The trick is to tap in, to give, and to never let go of that infinite power.

You might be just one person, but to another person you might just be the world.

Until next time, thanks for taking the time.

Why?: It’s Just About… Life.

April 15, 2014 By markbrodinsky Leave a Comment

why

The blog takes a short hiatus for Spring Break, time to rest, relax and reflect, so here now is part of a blog post from last year, it deserves another shot as a reminder to inspire and improve your life and maybe the life of someone else. See you in a few days….

“The two most important days in your life are the day your are born…and the day you find out why.” – Mark Twain

Of the countless things I have listened to and read in the past year on the topics of self-improvement, personal growth, goals, finding your purpose, pursuing your dream… this one still sits at the top of the list. You can’t read or listen to that line and not pause for at least for a moment and think. Thinking is a good thing, especially when it focuses on the inside — who you are, what you want and who you are supposed to be. Figure that out and life takes on a whole new meaning. It’s an answer unique to YOU, since you are unique, you have talents and treasures which might still be hidden, but realize you have a purpose and can make incredible things happen, if you can keep it simple and figure out WHY.

It’s up to you, and it’s a matter of some serious thought. Think about it, then write it down. Goals and dreams which exist only in your mind are like marbles rolling around in your head, you need to put it down on paper. Write it, read it, live it. Show all of us what you are made of, everyone deserves to shine.

Read it again, out loud this time: “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born…and the day you find out why.”

Fifty-percent of the battle is won, you’re here, now go find out why.

Until next time, thanks for taking the time.

WOW!!! It Takes 2 is a must read for anyone who has known someone diagnosed with cancer or other life threatening disease. This is the real story of a family lead by an incredible woman, Debbie Brodinsky, who took radical steps to beat the breast cancer beast. The story is told by her husband, Mark Brodinsky, through journal entries he kept starting with diagnosis through one year cancer free. This author's unique ability to pour his heart out onto the page draws you in from the beginning and holds you until the very end.

Thanks to Mark and Debbie Brodinsky for this gift...I have a new perspective on what it means to be a breast cancer survivor. You are a hero, Debbie Brodinsky!

This book gives a heartfelt, in depth description of what it is like to go through breast cancer with the one you love. It is beautifully written and I felt as though I was living it with them! I highly recommend this book!

In It Takes 2, Mark Brodinsky windows us into his world where his wife, the cancer patient, is not the only victim. Part journal, part roadmap, It Takes 2 goes to the real humanity of facing the mortality of one's better half. Mark's candid perspective, love, and fierce intention resonate with hope in a story which is about much more than cancer. Mark himself is perhaps the most heroic character for the way he appreciates this life and so many of us in it...as he says, "thanks for caring."

It Takes Two: A Spouse's Story by Mark Brodinsky should be read by every person who is experiencing serious illness or injury or by a loved one of someone who is experiencing either of those situations. The book is an eloquent testament to the power of love and the healing energy derived from the belief that things will get better. There is not one word of "poor me" from the author or his wife who suffered breast cancer and the radical surgery she elected to have to beat the cancer. Rather, the book is a celebration of the courage displayed by them both in seeing it through.

The book also encourages readers to speak and write down their true feelings and be validated in them. John Mackovic writing in the Palm Springs, CA Desert Sun on November 2, 2013 quoted author and artist Doe Zantamata who said, " To be happy, you don't have to do anything new. You just have to remember how to believe again...Believe everything good is possible. Believe in your dreams. Believe in people. Believe in love. But most of all...believe in yourself." The author, his wife, their family and extended family and friends never stopped believing in his wife's recovery, and I think, in themselves. Read this book and believe.

This book is a must read for anyone with a family member with breast cancer. It takes you through the spouse's perspective from diagnosis to recovery. Mark journaled his wife's journey and put all of his emotions out there. It is beautifully written and inspiring to anyone going through breast cancer. Thank you, Mark for sharing Debbie's story.

A friend recommended this book. This was a great perspective of a man standing beside his partner and passing along to the reader fear, hope, useful information and a broader story than his own. I loved Vinnie the tattoo artist. This is a great book. Thanks for sharing, Mark and "thanks for caring"

This book is a must read. What sets this book apart from other books about surviving breast cancer is that it is told by the husband and his point of view, not from the survivor. At times sad, at times poignant but even through the worst of it you can always feel the love he has for his wife, her strength and the strength of their extended family and friends. The posts that are included from their friends and family lets you really into the heart and strength of the family. I would recommend this book to anyone who is currently going through this, whether you are the person or the caregiver. I also recommend this book to anyone who has a friend that has been or is currently going through their fight now. It was an eye opener for me.

There isn't a shortage of books about breast cancer, but most are written from the perspective of the person who has battled cancer or a physician or other expert. What an enlightening experience to read about breast cancer from a husband and caregiver's perspective! Not only does the author give us insight into his wife's experience and emotions, but he openly shares and reveals his love, compassion, support, and, yes, sometimes anger at the disease as he stands by his wife's side during their journey to beat the beast. Your story may not be the same, but I guarantee if you have a loved one battling cancer, you won't go wrong reading It Takes 2.

From the moment I opened this book I never stopped reading. Mark invites the reader to come along on this journey that his family went through. I cried, laughed and learned so much. This book will give comfort and knowledge to those going through similar situations. Most importantly, Mark and his family never give up. They get knocked down and get right back up. They fought cancer together and with their strength, determination and will to prevail... They do!
